The Story Behind the Painting

During a visit to Japan, TSG watched female archers release their arrows while in motion and strike their targets. The encounter stayed with him. Long after the journey ended, those women—their movements, their focus, the certainty of their aim—continued to return to his mind.

There was something arresting about watching a body in motion deliver an arrow with such precision. Each successful shot made visible the discipline behind it: the practice, the patience, the trust between intention and action. For an artist whose own work depends on the relationship between eye and hand, the image carried a particular weight.

THE STILL POINT grew from that memory.

The women he witnessed find an echo in this solitary archer. Around her, TSG creates a landscape as restless as the moment he remembers: clouds gathering, robes flowing, mountains disappearing into mist. Her gaze remains directed beyond the edge of the painting. We cannot see her target; we are asked to trust that she can.

The arrow is still drawn, holding open a fraction of a second that would otherwise disappear. Painting allows TSG to return to it, to give lasting form to something he first experienced in motion.

Those arrows reached their targets in Japan. The memory travelled home with him.
