AMANI & KEZA

Amani was a quiet carpenter. Keza danced at every wedding in the neighbourhood. They met at her cousin’s wedding in 1979, when he asked her to dance and then would not let go of her hand until the band stopped playing. For forty-four years they were never apart for more than a night.

When people asked their secret, Keza laughed and said they never tried to become one person. He stayed steady; she stayed fire. When Amani grew too weak to stand, she would lift his arms around her waist and sway with him in the kitchen to the radio. She followed him only months later, and the family says she simply went to finish the dance. Black and red, wrapped at the arms. Never the same colour, never apart.
