ASCENSION

Habimana carried cement on his back for twenty-two years so his children could carry books instead. He spent most of his life bent toward the ground. On graduation day his eldest daughter, a doctor now, found him standing at the back of the hall, too shy to take a seat in front. She walked him to the stage and placed her cap on his head.

Everything he carried rises from his back as an enormous red cloud: the school fees, the hope, the prayers said at night. It looks heavy. It is also what lifted them all. He never stood tall. His children did.
