RIVERINE GODDESS

Umfula (Zulu for “river”) — Where the Reeds Remember

I travelled to KwaZulu-Natal and Eswatini in the season of the Reed Dance. I watched thousands of girls walk to the riverbanks, cut their reeds, and carry them to the Queen Mother, singing as one voice. It was beautiful, but it was also a crowd, and a crowd hides the individual.

On the last evening I went back to the river alone. The reeds were gone and the water had turned to copper. I kept thinking about the women those girls would become, and about the women who had walked that same path twenty years before.

This painting is one of them. She has come back to the water she knew as a child, with no reed in her hands, no song, no one watching. Her hands rest on her hips the way a woman stands when she has carried enough. She is not asking to be seen. She is simply facing the horizon on her own terms.

The broken land on either side is memory: blurred, scraped back, half gone. Only her reflection in the water is still clear, because some things the river keeps.
