REVERIE

The night before he left for the city, Eric sat on the floor of his father’s house until the lamp burned out. Stay, and keep the land his grandfather had cleared by hand. Leave, and perhaps become the first in his family with an office and a salary. He pressed his palm to his forehead as if he could hold the question still.

Look at the arms: they close into a circle. Thought goes round and round, but a circle has no dead end. By morning he had chosen. The sculpture keeps him in the hour before, the one every one of us has sat through.
