UNBROKEN

When raiders came up the valley at dusk, Nkusi sent the women and children across the river and stayed at the narrow bridge alone. The first spear found his side. He did not move. The second came, then the third, then more than anyone could count. Each one pushed him back, and each time his feet held.

From the far bank they watched him lean into the last of the light, chest open, arms loose, still standing. He held his final breath for as long as the bridge needed holding. When the village returned at dawn, he had not fallen. The red lines are the spears. The body bends, but the feet never leave the ground.
